MAKING OF THE ALBUM
A couple of highlights come back to me after recording the album and working with the various vocalists on this release. Quite a few of the legends that appear on Renegade Rocker were contacted via Myspace. At the time, Myspace was truly an innovative social site for musicians and fans and so many musicians you wouldn't think were on using it actually were. A few I connected to include Pinchers, Ranking Joe, Sugar Minott, Wayne Smith and Linval Thompson. Imagine growing up listening and knowing these artists' music and being able to send a Myspace message to talk about working together and they respond. This was a new way to connect back in 2007.

For each artist I worked with my goal was to try and capture a little of that magic sound from those songs I grew up with so my aim was to write music based on a certain song or style. For Alton Ellis I wrote a more rocksteady vibe so his vocals would fall into that groove. The same was done for Mykal Rose - an easy, smooth laid back groove was built around the vocals I was hearing in my head.

For others, I would send a few riddims for them to check and let them chose which they vibed with most. Part of being able to work with these amazing vocalists was that they were all professionals and knew exactly what to do. When they went in to record - I never gave them any suggestions or directions. I wanted them to be part of the song and bring their own distinct style, sound and lyric. They all delivered.

I remember Sugar Minott calling me from the studio after he'd voiced a take for me to hear it. Old school - he put the phone to a speaker. He sounded great.

Another highlight was talking with Alton Ellis. Sadly this was the year he passed away. He recorded the song in London around February 2008. His lyrics and message were and are beautiful. "Blessings of Compassion". To this day lyrically it is one of my favourites and I'm deeply thankful to have had the opportunity to work with him. (Thank you Trish from Roots Reggae UK for connecting us).

One of the things I noticed once all the vocals were back and I'd had time to sit with them and mix them into the final songs was that each singer brought a message of positivity and an overall thoughtfulness. No negative words or cussing.
